35000 Photos pour un Chef-d’Œuvre

La première fois que j’ai vu le travail de Christophe, j’ai tout de suite accroché sur le côté technique mais brut de son stop/go motion. Sur le premier clip, c’était assez sombre, car le titre à mettre en image l’était aussi, mais j’aimais déjà le côté poétique qu’il apportait. Quelques années plus tard, son travail avait pris clairement une autre ampleur. Plus coloré, plus pointu, plus pro, tout simplement. Je lui ai demandé de travailler sur mon titre Un Jour comme un Autre, j’ai été subjugué par le résultat. Ce clip alliait tout ce que je voulais, la beauté de l’image, la technique, la poésie dans les prises de vues et le choix des décors, et il faut l’avouer avec plus de 35000 photos pour un clip, un travail titanesque. Tout ça en rythme, et en illustrant parfaitement le titre. Ce clip a participé grandement au succès du titre, indéniablement. Même aujourd’hui, il m’arrive de le rejouer en concert, et aux premières images, les gens réagissent.

An Artist Who Elevates the Music

I discovered Christophe’s work through his amazing video for “Cusp”, a song by Mimi Goese and Ben Neill. As a musician, I have often felt ambivalent about the mandatory use of music videos in the promotion of albums: a music video will strongly affect the listener’s perception of the music, so if the video does not correspond to what the musician would like to transmit, this can potentially be harmful to the presentation of the music. Additionally, a mediocre video will never be helpful promotionally, and can instead make the whole project look cheap. When I saw Christophe’s “Cusp” video, I felt that I was watching both an autonomous work of art *and* a video that served the music by enhancing its beauty: his video felt carefully constructed yet wildly inventive, full of poetry and its own peculiar propulsive and gentle rhythm. Those qualities are very rare, so I immediately knew that I wanted him to create a visual world for my song “I’m Kin”: a song full of images and feelings of connection between natural elements and human beings. The challenge would be for Christophe to not just slavishly replicate those images, but somehow construct a world that would echo the images and feelings. He rose to the challenge in his unique way, making a video that feels both organic and abstract – a reconciliation of opposites which echoes just what I try to do in my music – , a video that could stand on its own as a work of art yet perfectly complements the music. Given how hard it is to work on commission (as opposed to just creating for one’s own projects), Christophe’s work proves how adept he is at making his inventiveness on both the technical and intellectual levels work in favour of another person’s project.

After I saw Christophe’s amazing video for Lusine’s « Aterial » I knew he was the one. Working with him turned out to be a pleasure, a 100% professional experience from beginning to end.

Creativity Beyond Expectations

The video Christophe created for our single, Favorite Place, is my favorite out of our entire music video catalog. He exceeded our expectations in creativity, production value and just plain hard work, which is apparent in the shot-by-shot style of the footage. The video caught the eye of not only thousands of viewers but even Huffington Post and other national news media outlets. Finding out Christophe was a cordial, amiable guy was just icing on the cake. We’d work with him again in a heartbeat.

Un talent exceptionnel

Je soussigné, Lieven Van Overbeke, par la présente que Christophe Thockler a travaillé pour le groupe Medialaan*. Étant leur directeur de création et showrunner des projets, je peux dire que nous avons cherché un talent graphique très particulier et authentique pour un grand show B2B. Nous sommes tombés sur Christophe sachant qu’il avait produit de superbes choses en stop motion. On était vraiment charmés par ses animations en stop motion utilisant la typographie. Exactement ce que nous avions en tête pour la partie de la chaîne Vitaya. Après avoir pris contact, M. Thockler fut bien précis dans toute sa communication. Il a très bien compris (à distance, ce qui n’est pas toujours évident) le brief et a lancé la production, qui était bien complexe car j’avais demandé des dizaines d’éléments à animer. Mr Thockler a signé pour la conception, la production et la livraison complète des éléments. Tout ça dans des délais assez courts, avec un niveau de qualité superbe. Il a fait un travail splendide pour nous. Christophe Thockler un vrai pro, bien communicatif et hyper dévoué. Le jour où j’ai besoin d’un talent créatif pareil je le contacterai de nouveau. A Vision in Motion

When I started thinking about a video for Arterial, I really wanted to find a good stop motion director. I found Christophe’s work and contacted him because there wasn’t a single video of his that I didn’t like. When he sent me his video for Arterial, I was blown away. My only parameter was that I wanted something involving blood, or blood flow, as that was the theme of the track. He nailed it, and added in a more cohesive theme of his own that matched the music perfectly. I also used a still from his video for the cover art because it worked so well.

Wonderful imagination

I had the pleasure of working with Christophe on two music video projects. Christophe has a wonderful imagination and is able to conceptualize ideas that are true to his art as well as his client’s. As a professional he is impeccable as his artistry is vivid.

Christophe m'a été recommandé et après un test concluant je lui ai confié la réalisation du film Ikepod Megapod. Les résultats et le "livré" vont au delà des mes attentes. Un grand pro qui tient ses délais. Créatif, inspiré, à l'écoute, je ne peux que le recommander pour tout film en slow motion ou classique. C'est de l'art. Ceux qui ont bossé avec moi savent que je suis souvent exigeant... c'est un euphémisme...
